Scriptures for Today

Here are some verses that God has been using in my life lately. . .

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, – Philippians 1:27

Do all things without grumbling… Continue reading

A Picture of Hope

I went on a mother-daughter outing with my mom yesterday to the National Craft Expo in Baltimore. It was a fun day with plenty of great craft vendors to visit. While much of it was beautiful work and all of it was highly creative and highly expensive, most of it was well out of our price range! But it… Continue reading

Fully Alive

This morning, I read a line in the New Rebellion Book of Days that jumped off the page . . .
“The world desperately needs you to come fully alive and live out your Kingdom purpose with confidence and determination.”
First, I was struck by the words “fully alive.” After spending several months on a lot of medication  and not feeling myself I know what it means to live in… Continue reading

“It doesn’t happen all at once, you become…”

The title of this post comes from the wonderful children’s book, “The Velveteen Rabbit” for those who aren’t familiar. And while we aren’t exactly stuffed toys, it’s true of us as well.

When I was in college, I had a few professors who would hand out this big stack of papers at the beginning of the first class with all the assignments for the entire semester. I hated this… Continue reading

New Strength for a New Day

I have enjoyed reading a small devotional book this year called “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young. The author was a missionary and during some difficult times, she personalized Scripture into short letters from God. She’s had two books printed from these writings and has a new book out this month. I love how she takes Scripture and uses it to remind me of things I often forget. The past few… Continue reading

Give Up Already!

This article was originally published in the Flourish Monthly Newsletter in February 2006.

I have a gift for you. It’s not a tangible gift, so don’t get too excited. Yet it is one of the greatest gifts you will ever receive. Today I give you the gift of allowing you to give up.

Now hang with me here a minute because I’m not talking about giving up your… Continue reading

Personal Inventory Questions

I had planned to add these to the blog a few weeks ago, but I had a hard time tracking down my list of questions. And then I got sick. But finally, I have them for you.

This list isn’t something you can just read through and answer as you go. You’ll want to print it out and set aside a block of time to take this list to… Continue reading

Kindness

I was reading the book of Ephesians this week and came across this verse . . .
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus

Is October over yet?

So apparently, I never got over my bronchitis. I think that the antibiotic I am normally prescribed is no longer working for me. This is the second time in a row that it’s taken a second antibiotic to get rid of this stuff. On a positive note, I do not have pneumonia. I was starting to worry that I did because the one side of my back was hurting so… Continue reading

Blast from the Past: October 2004

The following article was printed in the Flourish Monthly newsletter in October of 2004. I reprint it here for those who didn’t read it the first time and because we have had mice in the house again so it was on my mind!

There’s really no way to describe the horror of getting out of bed to find a dead mouse on the floor. Multiply that by five and… Continue reading

Hot or Cold?

I just finished the book “Deeper: Living in the Reality of God’s Love” by Debbie Alsdorf while I was home sick last week. I enjoyed the perspective of this book quite a bit and am glad I finally got around to reading it. (It’s been on my shelf for a few years!)

Toward the back of the book, she has a small list of “in-the-box” self-filled living thoughts that… Continue reading

Life Changing Truths

I just finished an excellent book that has been quite a good companion to our Sunday School topic. The book is called Deeper: Living in the Reality of God’s Love and is by Debbie Alsdorf. She is an excellent writer and speaker and has written a number of good Bible studies. Here’s a quote from the book . . .

“I have found over and over again that we
