February Reading Recap

I did a bit of reading in February, although I feel like I spent much of the month in the doctor’s office! I have been reading much more than I was the previous months, so I hope to keep that pace moving up. I have lots of great books I’m eager to get to.

For nonfiction reading in February, I managed to finish four books, two medical books related… Continue reading

Rules for Eating

I recently finished Michael Pollan’s mini-book “Food Rules” and enjoyed much of what he had to say. Most of the rules build on what he established in the book “In Defense of Food” which I also enjoyed reading. I will say that some of his food rules are a bit too extreme for common sense, which I think is always the best rule when making any sort of “rule book.”… Continue reading

Mini Book Review: Forgotten God

I just finished my second non-fiction book for 2010 and while the first one was so-so, this second one was excellent. Author Francis Chan made a big stir with his previous book Crazy Love which has been reviewed favorably on quite a few blogs I read regularly. I will probably read that book at some point, but it was his newest book The Forgotten God that drew my interest a… Continue reading

Reading Recap 2009

I finished out the year with reading just over 50 books. That may sound like a lot to you, but it’s a pretty pitiful showing for me. I’m blaming it on being sick, some vision troubles (happily corrected now!) and a packed schedule. (But I might have been a bit lazy, too!)

I also did far more studying this year than ever before so that took a bit of… Continue reading

October Reading Recap

Another month has come to a close and it’s time to see what you’ve been reading.

October has been a poor fiction month for me, as I only read 1 fiction title, The Maze of Bones. This was a young readers book and the first in the 39 Clues series. It was fun and had some great themes about family, loyalty and love. I am eager to read the… Continue reading

Hot or Cold?

I just finished the book “Deeper: Living in the Reality of God’s Love” by Debbie Alsdorf while I was home sick last week. I enjoyed the perspective of this book quite a bit and am glad I finally got around to reading it. (It’s been on my shelf for a few years!)

Toward the back of the book, she has a small list of “in-the-box” self-filled living thoughts that… Continue reading

A Pin is Worth a Thousand Words

Madeleine Albright’s newest book, “Read My Pins” has been getting some press lately. I read an excerpt from it in the latest “Real Simple” magazine and put the book in my Amazon.com wishlist. I hear there is a display of the pins in New York City. That would fun to visit. Here is a great little article with some of the pins and her stories about them. It’s… Continue reading

Loneliness Follow-up

If you find that you need some additional insight or comfort during a time of loneliness or is these posts stirred something in your heart and you’re ready for more, I’d like to recommend a book for you to read. This book has been revised and reprinted quite a bit since it was first written so it has been relevant to several generations. The book is The Path of Loneliness

Book Recommendation – Start reading now!

One of the most convicting yet hopeful books I’ve read in a long time came my way last week and I devoured it in two sittings on a Saturday. While a small book, it packs a big punch of a message. And it’s the one book you should be reading right now.

The book is The Prodigal God by Tim Keller, the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan… Continue reading

Get Out of Bed!!

I was glancing through a book on the New Books shelf at the Westminster Library last week and came across a funny chapter in the book The Expert’s Guide to Doing Things Faster: 100 Ways to be More Efficient. Since efficiency is a big things with me, I was curious to see what they suggested. Much of the book was either really basic or didn’t apply to me but the… Continue reading

Summer Reading

Summer is upon us, and after two years of struggling to read fiction, I think I might just be back in the groove. Well, I can’t be certain, but I can say for sure that I really want to be reading. :-)  I have a comfy deck chair and a big stack of books for the summer. Now, I realize that getting through all of these isn’t as easy as… Continue reading

Knowing is not believing.

feelThis last tool is a very important one so as we look at believe today, I am going to ask you to pay close attention to what I’m saying because it’s so simple it’s pretty easy to miss. The believe tool asks the questions, what do I believe about God and about how the world works around me. Our beliefs… Continue reading
