This chapter gives us a sobering reminder that Christ chose a life of poverty. There was no one more entitled to live a life of ease and prosperity. His father in heaven owns everything – he could have had it all! Yet he chose to be the least of them to serve all of us.
I have seen a clear correlation between physical neediness and spiritual neediness. It seems that when we lose all that the world defines us by, we are more likely to reach out toward God. Sadly, it seems just as easy to reverse that when things are more prosperous for us. The idea of choosing downward mobility is one that I’m wrestling with. This is such an easy area to compare ourselves to others in and feel guilty or superior by the efforts of those around us. The greater question must be, “what does God ask of me?”
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this chapter. I’ll be posting week 8 on Monday and we’ll be back on track for a change!
